We are constantly asking ourselves how we can best meet the needs of our students. There are a couple of service-learning classes where students are able to serve the community and apply that experience to enhance the classroom learning. We also provide opportunities for students to engage in service outside of the classroom with our large Day of Service and with smaller service events throughout the year. An interview with  Abby Honaker Schroeder, Director of the Regula Center for public Service and Civic Engagement at the University of Mount Union At the heart of Ohio Campus Compact’s AmeriCorps VISTA programs are the people that dedicated a year of service to our campuses. We recently reached out to our VISTA alumnus Abby Honaker Schroeder to discuss the impact of her VISTA service with OCC in her current role. OCC: Abby, can you start us off by giving an introduction to yourself and…

A Fearless VISTA Leader Gives Back

Ava Carvour (bottom right) at a Pack the Mac event at Otterbein University In a year, more than 8,000 Americans commit to national service with AmeriCorps VISTA. Every one of them has a different experience, shaped by the organization with which they serve. I spent three years with the VISTA program, two of them with Ohio Campus Compact as VISTA Leader for the Connect2Complete (C2C) program.  Our goal was to help Pell-eligible and first-generation college students achieve success through peer advocacy and community service and the program took on a life of it’s own on each individual campus: building upon…

An interview with Denison University faculty member Emily Nemeth On the surface, “Critical Pedagogy” and the “study of philanthropy” might seem to be disparate topics–certainly not something you would cover in your average Education course.  Yet, these seemingly disconnected concepts were a great fit for Pay it Forward, the Ohio Campus Compact service-learning program* that infuses the study of philanthropy and course-related community service hours into a variety of different curricula across disciplines and provides $2,500 for the class to award to local nonprofits. Ohio Campus Compact recently sat down with Emily Nemeth, Visiting Instructor in the Department of Education…
