David Hoch Memorial Award for Excellence

Congratulations to Alison Doehring, University of Akron, 2022 Award Winner.

Alison (Ali) is Director, ZipAssist, which serves as a central information hub, intentionally designed to share available resources, and provide support and assistance to help students be successful at The University of Akron. In her essay, she says, “The article, What Do We Mean By “Civic Engagement”?, published by Richard P. Adler and Judy Goggin in the Journal of Transformative Education defines civic engagement as “..the ways in which citizens participate in the life of a community in order to improve conditions for others or to help shape the community’s future.” As a lifelong volunteer and community engagement-focused professional, I resonate with the belief that a civic-minded leader is compelled to improve living conditions for all individuals. This tenant is something I strive to achieve each day in both my professional work and personal endeavors. My career at The University of Akron has afforded me opportunities to integrate my passion for community engagement with a keen desire to enhance the student experience for every Zip.”

David Hoch
The late David Hoch

The David Hoch Memorial Award for Excellence in Service is designed to recognize and honor the outstanding work in service-learning and/or civic engagement performed by a faculty or staff member at an Ohio Campus Compact member institution.  This award is named for the late David Hoch, the Dean of Honors at The University of Toledo, who served as the Director of Service Learning from 1999 – 2005.  Hoch was instrumental in initiating and nurturing the role of civic engagement at The University of Toledo, not only in the Honors Program, but in residence life and other departments as well. His guidance helped grow academic service-learning, student-led community service, and the presidential emphasis on broader civic engagement.

This award is given annually to at least one one faculty or staff member from an Ohio Campus Compact member school. To be considered, the nominee must demonstrate outstanding leadership in furthering the civic mission of the institution.  The president of the college or university must nominate each candidate.
