Community Engagement Professionals often have multiple roles, both formal and informal, many of which require them to organize others (students, other faculty/staff, community members) to advance mission, programming, and institutional change efforts. While typical training and academic preparation focuses on disciplines and project management, it overlooks our role as organizers. The goal of this training is to provide an overview of the theory and practice of community organizing as a framework and tool for activating change within and beyond campus, specifically for enhancing the work of community engagement staff and faculty. Participants will be provided a brief overview of various elements of community organizing campaigns (including identifying goals and purpose, relationship building, communicating and collaborating with stakeholders and constituents, mapping power and assets, strategizing and problem solving, and taking collective action) alongside some of the strategies and tools needed to go from conceptualization to action.  Participants will have the opportunity to convene in breakout rooms to connect with colleagues and develop ideas for…

The Alternative Break Citizenship schools (ABCs) are experiential training sessions that provide college student and staff leaders the knowledge, skills, and connections they need to start or strengthen a quality alternative break program. Part conference, part model alternative break, the ABCs combine workshops and planning sessions with an alternative break experience. The result is a dynamic learning opportunity that underscores learning in workshops and fostering connection with student and staff leaders from campuses nationwide. In light of coronavirus, we are forgoing our traditional four in-person conferences spread around the country and are excited about the opportunity to adapt to a virtual format. We will explore ways to continue service learning and alternative breaks through online experiences and hyperlocal service to ensure the safety of our communities.  Please join us on Zoom for the Virtual ABCs!

Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated effects across our country, and driven by our responsibility to ensure the best interests of our CLDE, ADP & NASPA community, we are moving the 2020 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) Meeting, originally scheduled for June 3-6, 2020 in Minneapolis, MN, to a Virtual Conference. At this point, Race and the Coronavirus can not be separated. In our efforts to feel like we can do something to protect ourselves, some of us have succumbed to our baser instincts. This is evident in the ways some Americans have treated people of Asian descent or how people of African descent are being treated in China. By talking about race in light of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 impact on our world, we are acknowledging awareness of the importance of this continued work. As we develop our ability and capacity to communicate across differences, we also become better global problem solvers. If we can take anything from this season in history, let it be this–that we are interconnected and need one another to survive in challenging times and to thrive as a global community.

Critical Service-Learning Across the Globe: Transforming Teaching into Social Action University of Nicosia, June 9 – 12 , 2020 SYMPOSIUM PURPOSE Transformation has become a central discussion theme in the higher education landscape worldwide. A retreat focused on preparing scholars to publish their community engaged work.  PEN TO PAPER 2020 JUST ANNOUNCED! REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 16, 2020.  Pen to Paper is an academic writing retreat designed to provide time, space, and resources to guide faculty, professional staff, graduate students, and community partners working on manuscripts related to service-learning and community engagement. The two and a half-day retreat provides participants with time to discuss ideas with and receive feedback from editors, receive mentoring from retreat facilitators, share ideas with peers, and write. Each year attendance is intentionally kept to a minimum in order to foster personal connections between participants, editors, and senior faculty coaches. The small group also provides the space participants need to focus on engaged scholarship. The Retreat is organized in such a way as to offer participants two tracks—the Ready to Publish track and Ready to Write track.
