Ohio Campus Compact Student Resource Center AmeriCorps members participated in MLK Day of Service projects during the month of January in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In collaboration with campus and community partners, AmeriCorps members planned service projects, recruited and engaged volunteers, and oversaw day of service activities. Our members engaged 377 volunteers for a total of 1,192 service hours.

Alaina Giovengo hosted three pop-up pantries at Baldwin Wallace University. These pantries served 155 campus and community members in need. 

Central Ohio Technical College hosts AmeriCorps members Jessica McKeehan and Sonja Darsee, who held a week-long school supply drive on the COTC campuses. The supplies collected will be distributed from COTC’s Student Resource Center to students.

Jared LaPointe, Reyna Polly, and Jasmine Thompson from Hiram College partnered with the Center of Hope to serve meals to residents of Portage County. AmeriCorps members and volunteers restocked the food pantry and assisted with meal preparation during the hot meal service at the Center of Hope.

Kaylee Adkins, Jacob Buttar, Sarah Conley, and Jessica Roberts collaborated with their host site, University of Mount Union, and  nearly 300 fellow students in their day of service project. They served on campus and at nonprofit organizations across Alliance, OH completing a variety of done in a day projects.

Ohio University Chillicothe’s AmeriCorps member, Jonathan Roberts, engaged volunteers to assemble Care & Resource Kits. These kits were distributed to local libraries, resource offices, YMCA’s, and shelters for community members facing housing crises, struggling with mental health and finances, and more.

Mackenzie Shultz-Flynn serves at Ohio University Eastern and worked with her campus to host an MLK Celebration Essay contest reading. Winners were presented with awards and a local NAACP chapter member, Jerry Moore Jr., spoke to attendees.

Kalena Speicher, AmeriCorps member at Kent State University, hosted a Service Speaks: A Civic Reflection Opportunity session along with a hot meal. She recruited 35 volunteers to prepare and serve the meal to those in attendance. Following the meal, Kalena facilitated a Service Speaks session discussing social justice. Twenty-five attendees discussed John Lewis’ piece, “Together, You Can Redeem the Soul of Our Nation”.

Skylar Benedict serves at the University of Findlay. She engaged 35 volunteers for over 100 volunteer hours to host a successful mobile food pantry on campus. The mobile pantry served food-insecure community members allowing them to drive up and receive food.
